Description
The Buddha's Philosophy of Man Paperback Book by Trevor Ling Everyman 1981 This new Everyman volume provides a selection of some of the important early Buddhist Dialogues found in the collection known as the Digha Nikaya. The Dialogues, set in the India of the sixth century BC, are discourses on ethics, values and attitudes, and contain teaching which is common to various later schools of Buddhist thought. Two main aspects of the teaching are presented here - personal life and social life - which have a significant place alongside the mystical and metaphysical aspects which are more frequently emphasized today. All the Dialogues included are given in their entirety, enabling the reader to gain a clearer appreciation of the structure and nature of the discourses. The introduction discusses the historical and philosophical setting for the Dialogues, and individual introductions and explanatory notes are also provided. The chief emphasis, however, remains on the reading of the texts, which are based on the Rhys Davids translation, extensively revised by the editor to convey to the modern reader the original spirit and style of the discourses.
